Precera Medical Expands into MIM, Additive Manufacturing with Acquisition

The deal for Additive Metal Services merges metal injection molding experience and specialized equipment with capabilities in precision machining and automation.

Contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) Precera Medical has acquired Additive Metal Services (AMS), a Port-Huron, Michigan-based company specializing in metal injection molding (MIM) and sinter-based additive manufacturing.

The acquisition expands the Big Lake, Minnesota-based CDMO’s capabilities in design and process development, rapid prototyping, precision and micro-feature machining, automation, and finished-device assembly. The combined platform supports customers from early-stage development and design for manufacturability through validation and scaled production, while helping identify the best manufacturing process for each application.

Precera, which debuted last year as a new SK Capital platform, said it also invested in production and equipment and infrastructure to support MIM in its Minnesota facility. This includes scaled programs needing automated MIM with finished machining, which suits products with complex geometries and tight tolerances.

The company operates four manufacturing sites: two in Minnesota and two in France. Its mission is to transform complex designs into manufacturable, reliable products for surgical robotics, minimally invasive surgery, orthopedics, and interventional therapies.

Precera said it plans to continue seeking strategic M&A deals to add more capabilities for medical device manufacturing.
